ARIZONA WATER ATLAS

As a result of high growth rates, physically and legally limited water supplies, drought, economic constraints and relatively little comprehensive water resource planning and management, water supplies are stressed in some parts of Arizona. The Arizona Department of Water Resources has collected and synthesized currently available water-related information for the State of Arizona into a “water atlas”, organized by planning area.

The purpose of the Atlas is to:
- Provide a comprehensive overview of regional water supply and demand conditions that has not been available on a statewide basis for over ten years
- [Update ADWR’s 1994 report Arizona Water Resources Assessment (Volume I -Inventory and Analysis and Volume II – Hydrologic Summary)];
- Identify water resource issues facing Arizona communities;
- Identify missing information and how information access could be improved; and
- Initiate a renewed and more systematic effort by the Department to assist Arizona water planning efforts and develop solutions

The Atlas is divided into seven planning areas composed of groundwater basins as shown on the map. Each planning area is discussed in a separate volume. The introductory volume is a companion report to each of the planning area volumes. There will be nine volumes in all:

Volume 9 Summary
The Atlas is data-focused, consisting primarily of maps, tables, figures and concise text. Each planning area volume includes information on geography, land ownership, hydrogeology, climate, environmental conditions, population, water supply, cultural water demand, surface water conditions, water quality conditions, streams and springs, assured or adequate water supply determinations and water resource issues.

THE ATLAS VOLUMES ARE BEING RELEASED IN DRAFT FORMAT FOR PUBLIC COMMENT AS EACH VOLUME IS COMPLETED. ADWR IS SOLICITING COMMENT FROM THE PUBLIC AND WATER PROFESSIONALS. WHEN ALL VOLUMES ARE DRAFTED AND COMMENTS EVALUATED, THE ATLAS WILL BE FINALIZED. PLEASE CONTINUE TO CHECK THIS WEBSITE FOR UPDATES.

2003 Rural Questionnaire Report
A first step in the Arizona Water Atlas effort was a questionnaire distributed in March 2003 to almost 600 water providers, municipalities, tribes, and counties in rural Arizona. The 2003 Rural Questionnaire was intended to gather information about water supply and water use, and to identify water issues and needs. This information will be included in the atlas. The 2003 Rural Questionnaire consisted of three separate questionnaires with questions designed for the particular group of respondents; one for water providers, one for jurisdictions, and one for tribes and counties. A total of 171 questionnaires were returned.
The report
 presenting the findings of the questionnaire was published in October 2004.
